The Fisherman

The waves they run, the waves they pound! In thought, upon the sand The fisher sits; his soul is bound By quiet's icy hand. An hour he sits, now two are gone; The waves fall in a hush. A lady rose from that watery zone, In Beauty's living blush. She looks on him, and sings to him: "For what do you my folk Thus lure from their birthplace, cool and dim, To the air, which must boil and choke? Ah! If you knew how my comrades live In the freedom of the deep, You would not yourself such torment give The feverish heights to keep. "Does not the sun his image oft Bathe in my waters' breast? And burns his beauty, now aloft, More purely for his rest? Does the wide firmament not spill Into our depths so cold? Do these not tempt you to my will That your heart mine might enfold?" Now run the waves, now crash the waves... Now a wave engulfs the shore! His soul with cold despair it paves, As a friend would soft implore! To him she sings, and him persuades-- His hour is now at hand! He runs to her, in him she fades... And traceless lies the sand.

Бежит волна, шумит волна! Задумчив, над рекой Сидит рыбак; душа полна Прохладной тишиной. Сидит он час, сидит другой; Вдруг шум в волнах притих. И влажною всплыла главой Красавица из них. Глядит она, поет она: «Зачем ты мой народ Манишь, влечешь с родного дна В кипучий жар из вод? Ах! если б знал, как рыбкой жить Привольно в глубине, Не стал бы ты себя томить На знойной вышине. Не часто ль солнце образ свой Купает в лоне вод? Не свежей ли горит красой Его из них исход? Не с ними ли свод неба слит Прохладно-голубой? Не в лоно ль их тебя манит И лик твой молодой?» Бежит волна, шумит волна… На берег вал плеснул! В нем вся душа тоски полна, Как будто друг шепнул! Она поет, она манит — Знать, час его настал! К нему она, он к ней бежит… И след навек пропал.
